Project Accountant at Leading Los Angeles General Contracting Firm

Job Summary

The project accountant position is accountable for monitoring the progress of construction projects, investigating variances, approving expenses, and ensuring that project billings are issued to customers and payments collected.


The Accountant’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the areas listed below.

Ongoing Responsibilities

  • Create project accounts in the accounting system
  • Maintain project-related records, including contracts and change orders
  • Working with the Project Managers is a large aspect of the job. This includes:
  • Authorize access to project accounts
  • Authorize the transfer of expenses into and out of project-related accounts
  • Review and approve supplier invoices related to a project
  • Review and approve time sheets for work related to a project charge with Project Manager
  • Review and approve overhead charges to be applied to a project
  • Review account totals related to project assets and expenses
  • Report on project profitability to Project Manager
  • Report to Project Manager on any opportunities for additional billings
  • Report to Project Manager regarding the remaining funding available for projects
  • Create or approve all project-related billings to customers

Investigate all project expenses not billed to customers Respond to requests for more detail from customers Close out project accounts upon project completion Create and submit government reports and tax returns related to projects Assist in compiling information for internal and external auditors, as required Investigate project variances and submit variance reports to management Confer with receivables staff regarding unpaid contract billings Work with President to approve the write off of any project-related billings that cannot be billed to or collected from customers Core Competencies

The competencies listed below are required to be used for this position.

  • Utilizes strong organizational skills as shown by:
  • Well organized financial files both in hard copy and on the server drive or protected drive on the Accountant’s computer.

Displays strong IT skills as shown by:

  • advanced knowledge of Excel, including how to use formulas;
  • ability to use Microsoft Word and Outlook efficiently; and
  • Proficiency with at least one accounting related software, such as Sage.

Displays strong communication skills as shown by:

  • concise, to the point, spell checked, and considerate emails;
  • the ability to listen attentively and document important points from conversations; and
  • Prompt responses to phone messages, text messages, faxes, and emails.

Able to employ effective problem solving skills, as shown by communication and documentation of a problem, and communication and documentation of how that problem was resolved successfully. Clearly developed interpersonal skills, as shown by the maintenance of excellent relationships with other CCI employees, subcontractors, clients, and architects.  Education and Experience

  • A bachelor's degree in business or engineering, with detailed knowledge of project contracts and change order documents. Must have excellent communication and writing skills.
  • Very strong experience with Excel, Sage, and Procore.
